Bicycle helmets should not be compulsory, say doctors - Telegraph

Bicycle helmets should not be compulsory, say doctors - Telegraph

What I said in 1995. Oddly, the cyclists who don't mind mandatory helmet laws also don't mind mandatory gutter laws... although they are opposed to mandatory traffic law obeying.

The truth? You can't handle the truth!

Why they do it...
Instead of trying to entice people out of their cars, why not adopt the flip side of the coin and force them out? In effect, this is what happens when fuel prices spike or other economic factors make driving more onerous than it already is.
Those cities with high bicycling mode shares also have tremendous congestion, high parking fees, and a cost of living that precludes automobile ownership for a large part of the population. But from a practical and political standpoint, no one advocates that driving be made more of a burden because all those motorists are taxpayers and voters. They far outnumber cyclists, so when numbers count (and politicians are very good at counting potential voters) motoring interests will win out.
Politically, it's a good idea to get those pesky cyclists out of the way of 'real' traffic, and build more mega-highways for motorists.
